3 DAY RIOJA PRE-TOUR
Rioja
March 26 – 29, 2025
Embark on a journey through Spain's Rioja wine region, where rolling vineyards and charming bodegas produce some of the world's finest wines. Savor rich flavors and aromas while exploring historic villages and picturesque landscapes. Experience the passion of winemaking in this celebrated Spanish wine haven.
Hosted by The Globe and Mail’s President & CEO, Andrew Saunders and International Correspondent, Nathan Vandkerklippe, the 3-day Rioja pre-tour is for 40 guests only and includes a three-night hotel stay in Logroño, Spain, two days of wine and culture themed excursions and dinners.
DAY ONE
Wednesday, March 26, 2025
We begin our journey in Bilbao at Calatrava’s spectacular airport*. A two-hour drive takes us to our hotel, the elegant Aurea Palacio de Correos hotel in the wine centre of Logroño. This stately riverside town boasts tree-lined squares, a stunning Baroque cathedral, and a fabulous selection of pintxos (Basque tapas) bars. Once you’ve checked into your room, you have time to explore the town. This evening, we host a Welcome Reception at our hotel where you will meet and mingle with your Globe host and fellow guests.
*Guests meet at Bilbao Airport at 1:00PM today for the transfer to Logroño.
DAY TWO
Thursday, March 27, 2025
This morning, we are off to our first excursion to Bodegas Roda, a relatively new winery which has quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality, modern-style Rioja wines for a tour of the cellars and a commented tasting. Continue to Marques de Riscal for a visit and wine tasting with lunch. Founded in 1858, this is one of the oldest wineries in Rioja. It is known for its innovative approach to winemaking and iconic architecture, including the Frank Gehry-designed hotel at the winery. Return to Logroño to enjoy the town’s wine and gastronomy independently.
DAY THREE
Friday, March 28, 2025
Enjoy a choice of tours this morning; a walk on a section of the famed Camino de Santiago which passes nearby; a tour of the important monasteries and castles of the region; or, if wine tasting is your preference, a visit to three Rioja wineries with tastings. The afternoon is at leisure before our special Pintxos bar dinner together.
DAY FOUR
Saturday, March 29, 2025
We leave Logroño this morning and travel by coach to Madrid with a stop for lunch along the way. After checking into our elegant hotel in the city centre, there is time for you to explore the neighbourhood. To kick off the main tour, enjoy a celebratory welcome reception hosted by our Globe journalists and meet your fellow guests.
